Gynecomastia

{Procedure} at a Glance

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes breast tissue to enlarge in men. It can affect one or both breasts and occur at any age. Gynecomastia can be caused by hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or weight gain. It’s almost certainly more common than most people realize.

Gynecomastia surgery removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and/or skin to create a more defined and toned chest contour. Your surgeon may use liposuction to remove excess fat, excision to remove glandular tissue, or a combination of both. In some cases, excess skin may also be removed.

Benefits

Downtime is typically 1-2 weeks, with some restrictions on strenuous activity for a few weeks.

Results

Most patients see noticeable improvements soon after surgery, with results continuing to develop for a year or more.

Am I a good candidate for {procedure}?

You may be a candidate for gynecomastia surgery if you are concerned by one or more of the following:

  • Have excess soft tissue on your chest
  • Chest sensitivity or pain
  • Chafing and discomfort around the nipples
  • Notice fullness in thin shirts

What do {procedure} scars look like?

Gynecomastia Scars

Gynecomastia surgery typically involves small incisions that are strategically placed to be as inconspicuous as possible, typically they are very small for liposuction or hidden around the areola for excising extra tissue.

Your surgeon will work to minimize scarring and provide you with detailed instructions on scar care after the procedure.

Recovery & Results Timeline

Keep in mind that every recovery is unique. Your surgeon will give you individualized instructions and timelines during your consultation.

  • <1 Week
You can expect swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. You'll likely need to wear a compression garment to help minimize swelling and support healing. Most patients can return to work between 2-7 days, depending on the type of work and the type of surgery.
  • 3-6 Weeks
Patients are often cleared to resume light activities within a few weeks. Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and submerging in water may be restricted for 6 weeks or so.
  • 3-6 Months
Swelling will continue to subside, and you'll see more refined results. Many patients have their “after” photos taken around 6 months post-op.
  • 12 Months
While you'll see improvements earlier, the results often develop for a year or more as the tissues settle and heal completely.
