Dr. Michelle Roughton is a board-certified plastic surgeon at Amelia Aesthetics in Raleigh, North Carolina. I’ve had the privilege of being on both sides of a consultation—as a patient and as a surgeon—and know just how exciting, daunting, and life-changing the process can be. Dr. Roughton is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and holds an active medical license in North Carolina. Before joining Amelia Aesthetics, Dr. Roughton spent years teaching and mentoring future plastic surgeons at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. That passion for education shows up in how she cares for her own patients, taking the time to explain your options, answer your questions, and make sure you feel informed and comfortable every step of the way.
Her background in both academic medicine and hands-on patient care means she brings a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to every procedure, always focused on achieving results that feel natural, balanced, and true to you.
Dr. Roughton earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also completed her undergraduate degree at UNC, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Honors and Highest Distinction.
She went on to complete her general surgery residency at the University of Chicago, followed by advanced training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the same institution. Her training reflects years of rigorous surgical education at leading academic centers, with a strong foundation in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
Dr. Roughton is an active member of leading professional organizations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and the North Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons.
She has held multiple national leadership roles within ASPS, including Chair of the Leadership Development Committee and Chair of the Young Plastic Surgeons Committee. She has also contributed to national meetings, education initiatives, and examination committees that help shape the future of plastic surgery.
Additionally, Dr. Roughton has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and research contributions focused on topics such as breast reconstruction, surgical outcomes, and patient access to care. She is also deeply committed to global outreach, volunteering as a surgeon with Medical Aid for Children in Latin America (MACLA), where she has helped provide reconstructive care to underserved patients.
Throughout her career, she has remained dedicated to education, mentorship, and advancing patient safety and outcomes.
